Rollover Protection Structures (Overhead Protection)

OSHA Subpart W Standard Number 1926.1002 “sets forth requirements for frames used to protect operators of wheel-type agricultural and industrial tractors used in construction work that will minimize the possibility of operator injury resulting from accidental upsets during normal operation.”

The standard includes requirements for rollover protective structures (ROPS) as well as specific guidelines for tractor operators. The safety measures are meant to reduce accidents and are relevant to all operators, even though OSHA standards are only enforced on farms with eleven or more personnel. If a worker is hurt or killed on a smaller farm, the employer can still be held liable under OSHA’s General Duty Clause.
