General Background:

Serious injury or death can be the result of improper use, or use of cranes having defective or poorly maintained components.  The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) estimates that most of these types of accidents can be prevented if proper safety precautions at job sites are initiated.  This poses a serious problem for exposed workers and their employer.  The OSHA Crane safety standards establish uniform requirements to ensure that the hazards associated with the use of cranes in U.S. workplaces are evaluated, safety procedures implemented, and that the proper hazard information is transmitted to all affected workers.

The following course outline is designed to make new crane operators aware of hazards that effect the safe operation of the crane.

I Introduction to Mobile Cranes

1. Work area inspection.
2. Personnel experience.

II Overview of OSHA’s Mobile Crane Regulation

1. Interpretation of 29 CFR 1910.180 from employee’s perspective.
2. Employee’s responsibilities in regards to the standard.
3. Compliance with the standard.

III Component Parts of Mobile Cranes and Chain / Cable Sling Ratings

1. Sling ratings.
2. Review and discussion of controls.

IV Safe Operating Procedures

1. Safe techniques when operating.
2. Safe Work practices
3. Daily report of Inspection

V Visual Inspections of Component Parts and Operational Tests for Mobile Cranes

1. Inspection procedure
2. Checklist review

VI Hands-on Proficiency Test

NOTE:  CSEM, Inc. may be contacted in the future to schedule a work place evaluation of the Crane operator in the work place.  This segment of the OSHA requirement can be easily documented by the employer and is not included in this proposal but will be mentioned in training.
